The Associate Director is the directors right hand person, taking responsibility for a number of important practicalities so that the director is free to concentrate on the creative process. During preproduction he break down the script into a shot by shot storyboard and work with the director to determine the shot order and how long each scene will the take to film. They then draw up the overall  shooting schedule(a timetable for the filming period). Once the film is in production , first are in change of making sure that every aspect of the shoot keeps this schedule.  Films

Associate Director works to make the Director more efficient. The Associate Director plans a shooting schedule by breaking the script into sections that can be filmed in a single day and in the most efficient order. During filming the A.D manages the set , helps line up shots for the director calls , for quite on set and coordinates the extras. The role of A.D on a film includes tracking daily shoot progress, scheduling all shots, arranges logistics, Preparing daily call sheets, checking cast and crew members and maintaining the order on set. They also having responsibilities of taking care of the health and safety of crew. He handles logistics of running the set during production.

The role of associate director is difficult to pinch, as it varies greatly depending on the medium (i.e. theater, TV or film) and the needs of the show and the director. For Petra for Wood (pictured above), it is important to make sure that their performance with the cast is real and enhanced to the show. A director is needed anywhere, so it can be in a theater or on a TV / film set. Really small structures may not require an associate director, so these are usually big-budget presentations that are needed. Associate directors and directors may work for the same business or organization, but with different responsibilities. Directors are responsible for a department, field, or campaign group, while associate directors report to directors and have specific tasks that involve the supervision of others. The Associate Director of Creative Services in an advertising agency may be responsible for the team that works the layout for a magazine. Associate director sets color background, fonts and text format with team members. They have to decide on mixed media, using images with images or using animation mixed with film or video. Many Associate Directors are promoted to these positions from the organization.

Coordinating the all production activity and supervising the cast and crew. They are also in change of a department of other assistant directors and runner. Overall they provide the crew whilst also liaising with the production office, and providing regular progress reports about the shoot. Before the shoot his main task is to create the shooting schedule, working in careful consultation with the director in order to fulfill his or her creative ambition. When drawing up the shooting schedule he must also be awake of budgetary constraints, cast availability and script coverage. Preparing the storyboard over the hiring of location,  equipment and checking weather reports are all key preproduction duties for first.

During production they must ensure that everyone is on standby and ready for the directors clue for action. They also control discipline on the set, supervise other assistant directors and oversee the preparation of the daily call sheet. Associate directors are also responsible for health and safety om the set or location, and must take action to decrease risks all time.

Associate director must be authoritative team leaders and motivators whilst also being approachable team players. They need time management skills. The ability to plan ahead, trouble-shoot an pay close attention to details is vital in this role.  Being a excellent communicator with fact and diplomacy skills is also essential as they must routinely  deal with problem or even crisis situations. They must also constantly priorities tasks and may be frequently interrupted the ability to multi task is crucial. First work long and often unsocial hours on a freelance basis, so a strong commitment to the job is essential. Its they also usually work highly pressurized and stressful condition a flexible and positive approach is highly valued.
