As a production manager, you are responsible for how the production budget is spent and make sure everything runs smoothly during filming. Before production begins, your work will include: Meet with producers and other senior production staff to examine script or program ideas Shooting schedule and cost estimate Hiring staff and contractors and negotiating salary rates Costs negotiations and approving booking of resources, equipment and suppliers To monitor site booking and establish necessary permits and risk assessment. To become a production manager, you need enough experience in TV or film, a deep understanding of the production process and a network of contacts in the industry. Experience and track record are more important than formal qualifications, however, it can be helpful to take a course that includes practical skills, the workplace and the opportunity to form contacts. You need a good understanding of budget management, so skills and aptitude in accounting are useful. For example you can start as a runner or assistant or secretary in a production office and then progress as a production coordinator and then an assistant production manager. You can also start as a trainee production accountant.
